Travel Awards, Research Awards, Science Fair Awards

The Canterbury Branch of the Royal Society has been proud to support a variety of awards relating to fostering an interest in and assisting the careers of young people in science.

Regulations for the Travel and Research Awards
  1. The Travel and Research Awards (the Awards) are governed in accordance with a Deed of Trust (the Trust), established following a generous and anonymous gift to the University of Canterbury for the benefit of the Royal Society of New Zealand (Canterbury Branch).

  • Any applications for Awards are assessed by the advisory trustees of the Trust, who shall be the sitting Registrar of the University of Canterbury alongside the sitting President of the Royal Society of New Zealand (Canterbury Branch), or their nominee (the Selection Committee). Any applications which are endorsed by the Selection Committee shall be subsequently reviewed by the Council of the Royal Society of New Zealand (Canterbury Branch) (the Council) for final approval. No Awards shall be granted until the Council issues its final approval.

  • In accordance with the Trust, Awards are granted with consideration to the following (Approval Criteria):

    1. whether granting the Award would aid emerging scientists; and

    2. whether granting the Award would contribute towards the advancement of science in Canterbury; and

    3. the financial need of the applicant, including whether the applicant lacks substantial institutional support.

  • Travel and Research Awards may be available to anyone who can show (to the satisfaction of the Selection Committee) that they meet the Approval Criteria. The ultimate decision regarding:

    1. whether to grant an Award; and

    2. the value of the Award granted;

shall be at the absolute discretion of the Selection Committee and the Council.

  • Applications are considered by the Selection Committee bi-annually. In any given year, applications to be considered for the first allotment of awards must be submitted before 31 March, with applicants informed of the result by 14 May. Applications to be considered for the second allotment of awards must be submitted before 31 August, with applicants informed of the result by 14 October. Individual applications may be reviewed and granted outside of this schedule on a case-by-case basis, at the discretion of the Selection Committee and the Council.
